Ranger
Mathew Mampra

He was the newly appointed forest range officer. The people were more frightened by this ranger, who ruled over that forest with his double-bar relled gun, than those wild beasts from the forest. The cries and tears of innocent tribal women got quelled under the ranger ‘s boots. His blood-red eyes and mighty hands that always smelled of cigars or liquor, crushed the wishes of the people for a peaceful life.

Even Murukan, who was subjugated under the ranger much like a slave. He had to accompany him like a shadow in all his cruelties but despite that could not save his own wife from RangerRanger reigned over that forest as a beast who had never known a defeat. But one woman – Sita, remained untouched by the Ranger.

Ranger didn’t choose to back away though. He decided to deal with this care taker first before moving on to Sita, and waited for his chance to finish off this caretaker called Suruli. And finally his opponent happened to be in front of his double barrelled gun at a convenient place and time. But just before he could pull the trigger, he was stabbed from the back by his own servant Mu rukan. For his own wife, and for the tears and screams of all the innocent tribal women of this forest, Murukan killed Ranger then and there in cold blood. The fate of Ranger was to bleed to death in that same forest where he crushed the honor of many innocent women. And finally the forest was left feeling tranquil and calm after a heavy storm.
